Diet is one of the most important parts to
having and raising healthy, long living,
happy parrots. Experts and long time
breeders believe that 85% of the parrots
diet should consists of fresh fruits,
vegetables, good seed mix, and small amounts
of sprouts varieties, changed on a weekly
basis.
Here at Avian Elites, we are always talking
about ways we can improve our diets to make
sure our birds have everything they
possibly, need and more. Our Diet consists
of everything we can find to make fresh,
exception to their dry diet, which is bought
and mixed together. We feed 3 times a day, @
7.00 am, 12.00pm and 4.00pm. A fresh millet
is given twice a week and their dry mix is
kept in their cages, all day, and changed on
a daily basis.
Eclectus Experts and long time breeders
believe that Eclectus parrots needs more
dark green, orange, and red vegetable
varieties such as: Dandelion Greens, Endive,
Kale, Mustard Greens, Collard Greens, Peas,
Green Beans, Broccoli, Green, Red, and
Orange Pepers, Asparagus, Brusell Sprouts,
Carrots, Yams, Sweet Potatoes, All varieties
of Squash- Butternut, Acorn, Spaghetti,
Buttercup, Zucchini etc. All Pumpkins and
Winter Squash need to be cooked for a
minimum of 25 minutes.
They also believe Eclectus should not have
Colored Pellets, synthetic vitamins,
carbohydrates, (especially gluten grains),
Spirulina, or Powdered green algae.
We here at Avian Elites believe the same
whole-heartedly, but we feel these items
should not only be kept away from Eclectus,
but all species/subspecies of parrots. No
matter if you have a Solomon Island Eclectus,
Congo Grey, Timneh African Grey, Blue Quaker
or even a Sun Conure these items have been
shown to be harmful and can adversely affect
their health and behavior.
Here are a few ways we make up our Eclectus,
Greys and Quakers meals:
6 to 8 different Fresh Fruits and 6 to 8
different Vegetables all mixed together (As
one meal).
Assortment of beans, brown rice, lentils,
split peas (as one meal). (We buy the soup
bean mix and they all pulverize their meals)
(Some days we will add in fruits and
vegetables).
Birdie bread with one of the meals above mix
with it (as one meal).
Assortment of noodles with vegetables added
(as a meal).
Brown Rice with fresh fruits and vegetables
mixed together.
Items listed below are all mixed together
and left in their cage all day, (changed on
a daily basis).
Here is a list of a few fruits & vegetables
